Two kinds of people move to Greyton. The ones who want either land to build or a ready made beautiful house and then the other bunch who wants character, character, character.
This exceptional picture perfect chocolate box cottage is an anomaly. Commissioned in 2005, the brief was to build an exact quintessential Greyton cottage- everything was chosen to look aged. Every element thought of to look like its stood a hundred years instead of 20!
On entry a huge double volume space house an enormous hearth with a heavy steel grate that was made by the owners father. Rustic red terracotta clay tiles throughout immediately sling you back 50 years into the past. Everything is considered and created to give a sense of old and way back. Lights adjustable in the kitchen seemingly dangling low- to avoid heads casting shadows when everyone sits around the table after dinner.
Doors are all unique and individually designed or sourced for each space. In the bathroom an ancient cast iron tub takes pride of place, the toilet with a chain cistern like in the olden days.
The bottom bedroom facing the garden has double doors leading out to the big, beautiful stoep area- ready to fling open first thing in the morning for some misty freshness or a cool, evening balm after hot summer days. An en suite with a substantial shower completes this space.
The front room faces north and must be heaven on cold winter days, the perfect sonkamer from back in the day.
In the yard over there a leiwater dam sits amongst a hodge podge of trees, all lovingly allowed to just shoot up wherever they wanted- pecan, guava, apple, lemon, maple and oaks.
Outside two tanks catch all water from the roofs- house, stoep and afdak and originally was pumped and used straight in the house. A very well built 2-car afdak adjacent leads onto clever outdoor lockable cupboards that houses firewood etc.
